Basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal, also known as Shaq, has filed for divorce, the Miami Herald reported on its website yesterday.
O’Neal, who currently plays center with the Miami Heat, filed the divorce petition on September 4 in Miami-Dade Circuit Court, according to his lawyer, Ira Elegant. O’Neal, 35, and wife Shaunie O’Neal have been married for less than five years and have had four children together; they also have one child each from a previous relationship.
According to the Herald, Shaq’s filing indicates that he is asking Shaunie O’Neal for a “correct accounting of all money, funds, stocks, bonds, and other securities” to which she has had access during their marriage. In addition, the couple has listed their Star Island home (in Miami Beach) for sale, asking for around $32 million. They had paid about $19 million for it in 2004.
Neither Shaquille O’Neal nor the Miami Heat has responded to requests for press comment at this time.
Shaq first became a star with the Orlando Magic in the early ’90s, and his stellar career continued with the Los Angeles Lakers before they traded him to the Heat.
It looks like much of Shaq’s divorce is going to be about money and property. He makes $20 million a year playing with the Heat — and that doesn’t include millions more in endorsement deals and the occasional movie cameo.
