British singer Melanie Brown is seeking to legally establish comedian Eddie Murphy as the father of her infant daughter, the Associated Press reports.
According to the report, Brown, better known as Scary Spice or Mel B, filed a paternity suit on August 1 in the Los Angeles Superior Court in an attempt to get child support from Murphy. At a press conference, Brown’s attorney Gloria Allred claimed that Murphy took a DNA test in June that proved he was the girl’s father.
Brown’s daughter, Angel Iris Murphy Brown, was born on April 3. The birth certificate lists Murphy as the child’s father, but this relationship has not been acknowledged legally.
“I am here today for one reason and one reason only,” Brown, 32, stated at the conference. “Angel is my baby and Eddie’s. She will always know that she was planned and wanted by both of us.” She explained that she and Murphy, 46, decided to have a child together after dating for several months, which made it all the more strange when he later said he wasn’t sure if he was really the father. “The relationship was in full swing right at the beginning of my pregnancy.”
There was no comment from Murphy’s spokesman, Arnold Robinson.
Brown also has an eight-year-old daughter from a previous relationship; Murphy has five children from his marriage to Nicole Mitchell Murphy, which broke up in 2005.
Murphy, who received an Academy Award nomination earlier this year for his supporting role in Dreamgirls, has become engaged recently to movie producer Tracey Edmonds. Brown, meanwhile, has reunited this year with her old group, The Spice Girls.
