Is Madonna’s marriage to Guy Ritchie on the rocks? That’s the question that British tabloids and magazines have been screaming this week, exacerbating recent rumors that the pop superstar and the film director are thinking of calling it quits. But the Material Girl’s press agent almost immediately denied the public gossip on March 17.
“I am delighted to confirm that Mr. and Mrs. Guy Ritchie remain happily married,” publicist Liz Rosenberg said in a press statement from New York. “Though they were in different countries recently — Madonna in the U.S. doing promotion for her upcoming album Hard Candy, and Guy finishing up post-production on his new film RocknRolla as well as completing a Nike commercial and working on several scripts in England — the family are joyfully back together at home in London.
“All is well and wonderful in the Ritchie household,” Rosenberg added.
Speculation of marital woes began earlier this year when Madonna, 49, appeared in public several times without her husband by her side. Ritchie, 39, was not in Berlin on February 13 to see the premiere of his wife’s debut as a film director, Filth and Wisdom. Neither was he present at Madonna’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in New York on March 11.
On the 17th, The Sun‘s website claimed that the marriage was “hanging by a thread”, that Madonna had been angry “that Guy had not supported her at several high-profile public appearances”, and that the couple had gone so far as to split their homes “into his and her quarters”. Meanwhile, News of the World ran a story that the relationship was virtually over and it was “all very amicable”.
The following day, however, Hello! reported that the couple had had a romantic reunion in London. “They’re now back together and relishing proper family time,” the magazine quoted a source as saying. “Madonna has gone all-out to organize a special evening this week, culminating in a romantic dinner.” The story also said that Ritchie had filled their multi-million-dollar townhouse with roses.
In addition, a Malawian government minister has decided to help ease the final approval of their adoption of a two-year-old boy, David. The couple also has a son, Rocco, 7, and Madonna has a daughter from a previous relationship, Lourdes, 11.
Madonna and Ritchie married in a Scottish castle in December 2000. Ritchie, who’s probably best known for the 1998 caper hit Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, later directed his wife in the 2002 movie Swept Away, which was almost universally panned by critics and audiences.
