In the latest development in the divorce battle between Sir Paul McCartney and estranged wife Heather Mills, the latter is now looking for a new lawyer. The London law firm which has been representing Mills confirmed on November 9 that she and the firm have parted ways.
Spokesperson Shimon Cohen of Mishcon de Reya Solicitors told the Associated Press, “We are not representing her anymore,” but declined to give a reason for the split due to reasons of confidentiality. The British tabloid The Sun, however, has reported that the firm quit Mills’ case due to her recent interviews with ITV, GMTV, and NBC, in which she defied court orders not to speak about her marriage to the ex-Beatle.
Up to now, the former model and charity worker was retaining Mishcon lawyer Anthony Julius, who had also represented the late Princess Diana in her divorce from Prince Charles. Macca’s current lawyer, Fiona Shackleton, worked for Charles in the same case.
Legal representation isn’t the only thing Mills, 39, has lost recently. Her media spokesman, Phil Hall, quit working for her shortly before she gave the TV interviews last week, in which she attacked both the media and McCartney, 65. She blamed the media’s portrayal of her as a “gold-digger” for causing death threats and nearly driving her to suicide, and she slammed her estranged husband for failing to protect her and their four-year-old daughter, Beatrice.
On November 8, Mills told GMTV that her televised rants had made her feel a lot better, in spite of the additional negative publicity they generated. “It’s been unbelievably cathartic,” she said. “It’s the difference between being in prison and being on parole. I’ve had eighteen months of the worst press ever, and I got the chance to protect myself and my daughter.”
McCartney and Mills married in 2002 and separated last year. They have been engaged in a bitter, high-profile divorce ever since.
