In this age of wall-to-wall, 24-7 entertainment media, it’s hard for any celebrity to keep a big secret. So it must have come as a bit of a shock for Emmy Rossum fans this week to find out that the young actor-singer had been married for two years.
Rossum, 22, secretly married her longtime boyfriend, music executive Justin Siegel, in 2007. Gossip blogger Perez Hilton reported last Tuesday that the union actually had been a marriage — and that their current breakup drama looks to be a divorce.
“Emmy and Justin decided to keep that part of their relationship a secret and out of the media spotlight. They wanted to keep it private in order to prevent their marriage from coming under scrutiny,” said an anonymous source, quoted on PerezHilton.com.
E! News later confirmed with the Los Angeles County Registrar Recorders’ Office that Rossum and Siegel, 27, received a marriage license in 2007. They also paid to keep all records of their wedding and marriage under wraps. No wedding date has been revealed.
The breakup is supposedly mutual. Life & Style reported more than a week ago that Rossum’s reluctance to settle down sparked the split. “They’ve been in a very tumultuous relationship,” a source told the magazine. “I don’t think she wanted to be tied down this early in her career and, though she’d never say that, that’s the reason for the split. Emmy’s really sad right now; it caught her by surprise.”
Emmy Rossum had the female lead in the 2004 film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera. She also has had roles in Mystic River, The Day after Tomorrow, and Poseidon.
