October 9, 2009: Confessions Part Three?

Usher releases new song about his pending divorce.

by Jeffrey Cottrill

Songwriters penning tunes about their personal lives is nothing new, so Usher isn't exactly breaking new musical ground with a new single about his divorce from Tameka Foster.

But the song, "Papers", released this past Wednesday, confirms some of the general rumored details about the marriage that ran among fans. For one, the marriage added some serious strain to Usher's relationship with his mother.

"I done damn near lost my mama," the R&B superstar sings in the song. "I done been through so much drama/I done turned into the man that I never thought I'd be/I'm ready to sign them papers."

Usher blames Foster for driving him to depression and being impossible to please in the song, after saying he's not going to assign blame to anyone at the start. "I know it's you I love/I also know it's you I don't like," he sings at one point. At another point, he says, "I ain't afraid to say I got needs" and laments being "tired of sleeping in the other room.

"You leave me no options, girl," Usher sings, referring to the breakup.

"Papers" is the first single from Usher's upcoming album, Raymond vs. Raymond, due for release in December. The album's title alone hints at subject matter dealing with his divorce. (Usher's full name is Usher Raymond IV.)

Usher, who turns 31 this coming Wednesday, married Foster in August 2007. They have two children, both less than two years old. He has previously dated TLC's Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas as well as Naomi Campbell. Foster also has three sons from previous relationships.

Usher rose to stardom in the late 1990s with his second album, My Way. Subsequent albums 8701, Confessions, and Here I Stand topped the charts internationally. His hits include "You Make Me Wanna", "Nice and Slow", "U Remind Me", "Yeah!", and "Burn".
