January 5, 2010: Mystic Relationship by Jeffrey Cottrill They outlasted the vast majority of Hollywood couples by many years, but in the end, not even Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins could make it work. The Oscar-winning actors, known as much for their liberal activism as for their acclaimed film performances, announced on December 23 that they had ended their 21-year relationship over the summer. No reason was given for the breakup. The pair had never married, but have two sons, 20-year-old Jack Henry and 17-year-old Miles Guthrie. "Actress Susan Sarandon and her partner of 23 years, actor Tim Robbins, have announced that they separated over the summer," Teal Cannaday, a spokesperson for Sarandon, said in a press statement. "No further comments will be made."
The couple first met on the set of the baseball-themed romantic comedy Bull Durham in 1988. They worked together again on the critically acclaimed 1995 drama Dead Man Walking, for which Sarandon won a Best Actress Academy Award and Robbins received an Oscar nomination for directing. In more recent years, Sarandon and Robbins were in the media as outspoken critics of the George W. Bush administration and the war in Iraq. Sarandon, 63, was married to actor Chris Sarandon from 1967 to 1979; she kept Sarandon as her stage name after they divorced. She has an adult daughter, actor Eva Amurri, from a past relationship with Italian filmmaker Franco Amurri. Tim Robbins, 51, won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Clint Eastwood's Mystic River. He also gave acclaimed performances in The Player and The Shawshank Redemption. Susan Sarandon's other best-known films include the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, as well as Atlantic City, Thelma & Louise, and Lorenzo's Oil. She last appeared in The Lovely Bones and has a supporting role in Oliver Stone's upcoming sequel, Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps.
