April 24, 2008: Trying to keep up with the Jones

Former The View co-host Star Jones has filed for divorce.

by Jeffrey Cottrill

The rumors of marital non-bliss were correct all along.

Only three years after her notorious "Bridezilla" wedding, TV personality (and former prosecuting attorney) Star Jones has filed for divorce from Al Reynolds.

The former co-host of The View sent a statement to Entertainment Tonight on April 23, revealing that she'd submitted the divorce papers in Manhattan's New York Supreme Court on March 26. Specific reasons for the split aren't publicly known, however, as the documents are sealed. A spokesperson for Jones' PR firm, SHADOW, confirmed the pending divorce to the Associated Press.

"The dissolution of a marriage is a difficult time in anyone's life that requires privacy with one's thoughts," Jones' ET statement read. "I have committed myself to handling this situation with dignity and grace and look forward to emerging from this period as a stronger and wiser woman."

Her announcement also referred to the couple's controversial wedding party on November 13, 2004: "Several years ago, I made an error in judgment by inviting the media into the most intimate area of my life."

The lavish, elaborate wedding to Reynolds, an investment banker, landed Jones the title of 2004's Top "Bridezilla" from the cable TV station WE: Women's Entertainment. The televised and much-hyped ceremony, which took place at New York's St. Bartholomew's Church, was attended by about 500 guests, including Hillary Clinton, Spike Lee, Donald Trump, Kim Cattrall, Vivica A. Fox, and The View co-hosts Barbara Walters, Joy Behar, Meredith Vieira, and Elisabeth Hasselback. More than 30 corporate sponsors donated supplies and services for the wedding, and Jones drew much public criticism for frequently plugging the sponsors in the media and on her website.

She later apologized on the Today show on NBC for being "caught in the euphoria" of the wedding. "I think I used, and some would say abused, my celebrity in planning the wedding," she said at the time.

Star Jones, 46, began her career as an attorney practicing criminal prosecution. She became a commentator for Court TV in 1991, and was also a legal correspondent for NBC, before joining the ABC women's talk show The View in 1997 as its first African-American co-host. In 2006, The View didn't renew Jones' contract, and she left the show in June of that year; Walters cited the negative media coverage of Jones' wedding as one of the reasons. More recently, Jones hosted a short-lived talk show for truTV.

Current relationship rumors have linked Jones with Miami Heat superstar Dwayne Wade, according to E! Online.

Reynolds, 39, is reportedly shopping around a tell-all book about his marriage with Star Jones.

Star Jones may know her criminal law, but she'll probably need a little help when it comes to getting a divorce. Click here for our advice on how to create the best possible working relationship with your divorce lawyer.
