April 10, 2008: Back into the wild

Sean Penn and Robin Wright Penn reconcile their marriage.

by Jeffrey Cottrill

It looks like the split didn't work out. Actors Sean Penn and Robin Wright Penn have called off their divorce.

Marin County Superior Court officials in San Francisco confirmed to TV entertainment-news show Extra that the divorce case was dismissed on April 8. The show spotted the couple together that evening at an Eddie Vedder concert in at the University of California in Berkeley, where Penn took the stage and dedicated a song to his wife for her 42nd birthday.

Celebrity website TMZ.com posted the court document withdrawing Wright Penn's divorce petition on April 9. The court had dismissed the case "without prejudice".

There was no comment from either of Penn's or Wright Penn's representatives.

The conflict between the couple began to surface in public in December. Sean Penn's divorce attorney, Mindy Ross, told Yahoo!Xtra that he'd filed a divorce petition as early as December 7, claiming their separation date as November 30, but then withdrew it on the 18th; Wright Penn filed one of her own three days after that and cited irreconcilable differences. Reports abounded of alleged infidelity on Penn's part, and the Oscar-winning actor was spotted by the media with other women, most notably model Petra Nemcova.

The couple began dating in the early '90s and married in 1996. They have two teenage sons and live in Ross, California.

Robin Wright Penn starred in the still-popular '80s romantic comedy The Princess Bride. Sean Penn, who was once married to Madonna, got his break in 1982 with Fast Times at Ridgemont High; his movie credits also include Dead Man Walking, Sweet and Lowdown, and Mystic River, and he won an Academy Award for the latter. Last year he directed the acclaimed film Into the Wild.

Not many divorce stories end up with peaceful reconciliation. Maybe the Penns will work it out this time. Click here for high-profile Los Angeles divorce lawyer Stacy Phillips' advice on keeping your marriage together.
