September 11, 2008: Her separation is now Surfacing

Canadian singer Sarah McLachlan separates from husband.

by Jeffrey Cottrill

Less than a month before the release of her greatest-hits album Closer: The Best of Sarah McLachlan, veteran Canadian pop star Sarah McLachlan has announced that she is separating from Ashwin Sood, her husband of 11 years. In fact, the album will include two new songs both inspired by her marital woes.

"I'm separating from my husband, so these are the songs about that," the 40-year-old singer-songwriter told Billboard.com on September 10. She added: "I wasn't planning on saying anything, but it's gonna come out at some point. I haven't said anything about it because I've been terrified to, but I figure... there's no good time to say it, so I just said it."

McLachlan didn't explain the reasons for the breakup, but she described it as "pretty gross".

Sood, who turns 41 later this month, has been McLachlan's drummer for most of her career. The couple met in the early '90s and married in February 1997 in Jamaica. They live in Vancouver and have two daughters, India Ann Sushil, 6, and Taja Summer, 1.

The two new songs, "U Want Me 2" and "Don't Give Up on Us", were both co-written by McLachlan and her long-time producer, Pierre Marchand. McLachlan described the latter song to Billboard.com as "pretty self-explanatory, basically just a plea to give it another chance and keep trying". "U Want Me 2", she added, is "about that really uncertain, confusing place at the end of a relationship when there's no communication or closure, everything’s still up in the air, and there's a lot of anger and sadness. It's sort of that working through 'How do we move forward... with some dignity and grace.'"

Amazon.com premiered the video for "U Want Me 2" on the same day that Billboard.com posted its report on the separation.

Sarah McLachlan began her career in the late 1980s and soon received much critical acclaim and commercial success, first in Canada and later in the U.S. and worldwide. Her hit albums include Solace, Fumbling towards Ecstasy, Surfacing, and Afterglow. She also founded the highly successful Lilith Fair all-female-artist music tours, which ran from 1997 to 1999.

Arista Records will release Closer on October 7.
