December 17, 2011: This marriage is six feet under

Dexter star Michael C. Hall is getting a divorce.

by Jeffrey Cottrill

Marrying a co-star or co-worker can be a tricky business. A good working relationship doesn't necessarily equate to a good love relationship, especially when you see each other at both work and home. That may have been the case with TV star Michael C. Hall, whose marriage of less than two years to Dexter cast-mate Jennifer Carpenter is ending.

Hall and Carpenter announced their impending divorce on Monday, via a joint statement from their representatives to Entertainment Weekly. "Having been separated for some time," the statement said, "Jennifer Carpenter and Michael C. Hall have filed for divorce." The reps added that the breakup was amicable.

Making the Decision

The pair met in 2006 during the first season of Dexter, in which Carpenter, 31, plays the foster sister of Hall's character, forensic analyst and secret serial killer Dexter Morgan. After dating for a year and a half, Hall and Carpenter eloped on New Year's Eve in California in 2008. They appeared together in public as a married couple for the first time at the 2009 Golden Globes ceremony.

This was Hall's second marriage; the actor was previously hitched to actor-singer Amy Spanger, with whom he co-starred in Broadway's Chicago in 2002. They divorced in 2006.

Jennifer Carpenter made her film debut in 2001 and won critical acclaim for her performance as the title role in The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

Michael C. Hall, 39, first hit it big as funeral director David Fisher in the HBO series Six Feet Under, for which he received his first Emmy and AFI Award nominations. Earlier this year, Hall underwent treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma, which is now in remission. Dexter recently completed its fifth season.
