January 23, 2010: Ghosts of Marriages Past by Jeffrey Cottrill Even the stars need help sometimes when their marriages don't work out. Jennifer Garner, for one, was willing to humble herself and get professional assistance when she separated from her first husband, actor Scott Foley, in 2003. The Alias star told Parade magazine this week that she went to therapy after the split. "I had a lot of growing up to do," Garner told the magazine. She explained that at the time, she'd had trouble communicating her true feelings, which may have contributed to the marital breakdown. "I don't like to argue," the 37-year-old actor added. "But back then, I couldn't have a fight. I couldn't work things out, because I wasn't able to say what I needed to say. It was a huge heartbreak for me. So I went to work on it."
Foley and Garner first met in 1998 on the set of the TV series Felicity, on which Foley was a regular and Garner had a recurring role. They married in October 2000 and separated in May 2003; the divorce became final the following March. At the time, both blamed their Hollywood lifestyle -- particularly Garner's rising stardom on Alias -- for the divorce. Garner married Ben Affleck in June 2005. They have two daughters, four-year-old Violet and one-year-old Seraphina. Jennifer Garner won a Golden Globe Award for her role as Sydney Bristow in Alias. She has also starred in the movies Daredevil, 13 Going on 30, and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, and she received acclaim for her supporting performance in Juno. Her next appearance is in the upcoming Valentine's Day.
