November 23, 2009: His marriage sleeps with the fishes

Godfather actor James Caan files for divorce.

by Jeffrey Cottrill

A fourth marriage was an offer that James Caan couldn't refuse -- until now, that is. The actor, best remembered as hot-tempered mafia heir Sonny Corleone in the gangster film classic The Godfather, submitted a divorce filing last week.

This is the second time that Caan has filed for divorce from Linda Stokes, his wife of 14 years. Caan first sought a split from her in 2005, but the case was later dropped.

Caan, 69, cited irreconcilable differences in the latest divorce filing. He is seeking joint child custody of the couple's two sons, 14-year-old James Arthur and 11-year-old Jacob Nicholas.

The actor has been married three times previously. He has two adult children from his marriages to Dee Jay Mattis and Sheila Ryan; he also has an 18-year-old son, Alexander James, from his marriage to Ingrid Hajek.

James Caan began his acting career in the 1960s and won wide praise for his role as real-life dying football star Brian Piccolo in the critically acclaimed 1971 TV movie Brian's Song. He received an Academy Award nomination for his performance as Sonny Corleone in The Godfather and reprised the role in a flashback scene in The Godfather Part II. Caan's later films include Alien Nation, Dick Tracy, Misery, Mickey Blue Eyes, and Elf. He recently voiced a character in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and will next appear in Middle Men.
