November 15, 2011: Divorce Equality, Says Melissa Etheridge

American rock singer-songwriter and musician Melissa Etheridge said she wants the right to marry so she can get divorced.

Etheridge separated from her partner of 9 years, Tammy Lynn Michaels last April.

They are both claiming irreconcilable differences in separate filings to end their California domestic partnership. They have twin children, 4-year-old son Miller and daughter Johnnie Rose. Etheridge is asking for joint custody .

Michaels on the other hand wants full custody of the children with visitation rights for Etheridge.

Etheridge has denied that they were married, but Michaels claimed that they were.

She is known for her mixture of confessional lyrics, pop-based folk-rock, and raspy, smoky vocals. She has also been an iconic gay and lesbian activist since her public coming out in January 1993.
