January 16, 2010: Not-so-true romance by Jeffrey Cottrill Veteran actor Dennis Hopper is spending his time "surrounded by family and friends" as he battles prostate cancer, according to The Huffington Post. But he appears to have decided that that family numbered one too many. On Thursday, the co-star and director of the classic 1960s counterculture movie Easy Rider filed for divorce from his wife of 13 years, Victoria Duffy. Hopper cited irreconcilable differences in his divorce filing with Los Angeles Superior Court. He wants joint child custody of the couple's six-year-old daughter, Galen, and has begun the process of arranging spousal support for his soon-to-be ex-wife. Hopper and Duffy separated on Tuesday. "This is about getting Victoria out of the will, nothing more, nothing less," a friend of the couple told The Huffington Post yesterday. "It's truly a tragedy, and sadly, it's all about the money and who inherits what."
Another source suggested to the Post that the enormous amount of medication Hopper, 73, is taking may be incapacitating his mental state. Hopper has been fighting prostate cancer since 2002, but word about it didn't hit the public until last fall. Recent reports say that the cancer has spread to his bones, and tabloids are suggesting that he isn't long for this world. Duffy, 41, is Hopper's fifth wife. This has been his longest-lasting marital union; his 1970 marriage to singer-songwriter Michelle Phillips lasted only eight days. He has three other children, ranging in age from 19 to 47, each of them from a different marriage. Dennis Hopper had supporting roles in the film classics Rebel without a Cause, Giant, and Cool Hand Luke before hitting it big with Easy Rider, a movie that helped usher in the New Hollywood era of more challenging and realistic American filmmaking. He also directed the critical and commercial bomb The Last Movie and later played colorful characters in Apocalypse Now and Blue Velvet.
