October 17, 2008: The Sex Files

Actors David Duchovny and Tea Leoni have separated.

by Jeffrey Cottrill

It turns out Agent Mulder is looking for a new FBI partner. Or maybe several.

Less than three months after the revelation that The X-Files star David Duchovny was getting treatment for sex addiction, the news has come out that he and his wife of 11 years, actor Tea Leoni, have been separated for a while.

The couple's representatives sent a joint statement to People on October 15. "In light of continuous speculation over the lives and marriage of Tea Leoni and David Duchovny," the statement read, "the couple has confirmed that they have in fact been separated for several months. The couple had hoped to keep this separation private for the sake of their children."

Leoni and Duchovny have two children, nine-year-old Madelaine and six-year-old Kyd.

Duchovny, 48, revealed to the press on August 28 (via his lawyer) that he had checked into an Arizona rehab clinic for sex addiction. E! Online quoted his attorney as saying that the actor "successfully completed his treatment" last week and was "about to start a new movie".

Duchovny and Leoni, 42, married in May 1997 and have been living in Malibu, California. Leoni was previously married to TV producer Neil Tardio, Jr. from 1991 to 1995.

David Duchovny is, of course, best known for playing supernatural-obsessed FBI agent Fox Mulder on the iconic TV mystery series The X-Files, from 1993 to 2002 and again this year in the film The X-Files: I Want to Believe. He won a Golden Globe award for this role in 1996 and another in 2007 for his current series, Californication -- in which, ironically enough, he plays an oversexed single father.

Tea Leoni's film credits include A League of Their Own, Bad Boys, Deep Impact, Jurassic Park III, and Spanglish. She's currently onscreen in the acclaimed comedy Ghost Town.
