February 26, 2011: Just Friends?

David Arquette discusses marriage with Courteney Cox on Oprah.

by Jeffrey Cottrill

Actor-director-wrestler David Arquette is continuing his campaign of telling all in public interviews. First came his interview with radio shock jock Howard Stern last October, a day after the announcement of his separation from Friends star Courteney Cox. Then, on Thursday, Arquette revealed more about his troubled marriage and experiences with drug addiction on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

"There were tabloid stories coming out about my wife Courteney and someone on her show having, you know, an affair," Arquette told Oprah Winfrey on the show. "I thought she was having an affair with someone. Nobody would've said something like that if she weren't.

"I was angry with... the dynamic of our relationship," Arquette added. "I was angry with my wife."

The 39-year-old actor, who has worked as a screenwriter and fashion designer as well, also revealed that he and Cox had discussed separation for months before they actually split. According to Arquette, on their 11th wedding anniversary, she said to him, "I don't want to be your mother anymore." He added: "She came down really depressed one day and was like, 'I'm really just not happy.'"

Arquette recently finished a month-long stay in a rehab clinic, and he told Oprah that it was a confrontation with Cox and his sister, Medium star Patricia Arquette, that persuaded him to get help.

"I had taken a nap. I woke up, and Patricia and Courteney were at my bed. Courteney had a cup of coffee. I was like, 'What are you two doing here together?' I already knew." They brought him to the living room, where he saw his "best friend… my business partner, and some guy I don't know. I go, 'What up, turkeys? I guess this is my intervention!'" Arquette said that he has been sober since the end of last year.

Arquette and Cox, 46, married in June 1999. They have a six-year-old daughter, Coco Riley, of whom Cox's Friends co-star Jennifer Aniston is the godmother.

David Arquette is the brother of Rosanna Arquette as well. He is best known for his role in the Scream horror movie series and will appear in the fourth installment this April. Other film credits include Airheads, Never Been Kissed, and Hamlet 2.

Courteney Cox got her start in 1984 as the fan Bruce Springsteen invited onstage to dance in his video for "Dancing in the Dark". She later had a recurring role as Alex Keaton's girlfriend on Family Ties, before landing superstardom on Friends.
