Just when you thought it was safe to turn the 15-minutes of fame page on Jesse James, he’s back in the spotlight – this time, to talk about his engagement to tattoo artist Kat Von D (and possibly, about her 4-carat platinum and diamond ring).

James, who is arguably known more for his infidelity and eventual divorce from Oscar-winner Sandra Bullock than for his motorcycle guru-hood and realty TV stardom, apparently informed his ex about the engagement before it was announced publicly, in order to avoid upsetting her. According to sources close to James: “Sandra knew it was coming, and she was ready.”  

As for the J-man himself, he seems to have moved on from what most (but evidently not him) would consider a hellish last year.

"You know sometimes the public and press gets it wrong,” James told PEOPLE in an exclusive interview. “This is one of those times. 2010 was actually the best year of my life because I fell in love with my best friend. An amazing woman who stood behind me when the world turned their backs. I have never met anyone so kind and loving and committed to making the world a better place every day. My love for her is beyond description. So honored that she said 'yes.' Growing old with her is going to be a f----n' blast!"

Since their divorce in June of last year, Bullock has finalized the formal adoption of her step-son Louis. She’s also rumored to be dating her The Proposal co-star Ryan Reynolds.
