Bend the truth like Beckham

Soccer superstar David Beckham reportedly confesses to an affair.

by Jeffrey Cottrill

For the past two weeks, the British press has been dominated by allegations that soccer captain David Beckham has carried on affairs during his marriage to former Spice Girl Victoria Adams (a.k.a. Posh Spice). Now, an April 18 report in the News of the World claims that Beckham even admitted to one affair during a phone call to his wife.

Beckham's former personal assistant, 26-year-old Rebecca Loos, was paid a six-figure sum in pounds sterling for her story about an alleged extramarital relationship between her and the athlete, during which affair he is supposed to have sent raunchy mobile-text messages to her. Loos, who is the daughter of a Dutch diplomat, also appeared in a TV interview on April 15, saying that she could prove the affair had occurred.

According to the News of the World, Beckham told Adams about his affair with Loos on April 8. "Yes, I did have the affair, and I did send Rebecca the text messages," the paper quoted him as telling his wife on the phone.

Although Beckham has publicly called the Loos claims ludicrous, other women have come forward to the media claiming to have had affairs with him. Malaysian-born Sarah Marbeck, 29, says she had an affair with the English soccer star beginning in July 2001. And according to another newspaper, The People, Beckham had a one-night stand with Celina Laurie, a vicar's daughter; the affair occurred after a game in Denmark in August of 2002.

In spite of the couple's public displays of unity, News of the World has reported that Adams is now considering a trial separation from Beckham because of the affairs. Friends of the singer told the paper that she'd been upset by Loos' TV interview, in which Loos said about her affair that Beckham had made her "feel like a million dollars" in a Madrid hotel room, feeding her strawberries.

Rumors of strain in the marriage had already begun in mid-2003, when Beckham moved from the Manchester United soccer team to Real Madrid. Adams refused to move to Spain with her husband, choosing instead to stay in Britain with their two children.

The Beckhams have been married since 1999. Beckham reportedly gave his wife a $1.8 million pink diamond ring for her 30th birthday this month.
