After months of accusations and rumors, the divorce of New York Yankees' third baseman Alex Rodriguez is finally over. The slugger and his wife, Cynthia Rodriguez, have reached a settlement.

A public statement from Rodriguez's divorce lawyer, Alan Kluger, announced on September 18: "Cynthia and Alex Rodriguez have amicably resolved their dissolution of marriage proceedings." The couple was married for less than five years.

"They deliberately engaged in a private negotiation. This was and remains a personal family matter for both of them," Kluger added. "All of their decisions were based upon and guided by the best interests of their daughters." The former spouses have two girls, three-year-old Natasha and five-month-old Ella.

Neither Kluger nor the Rodriguezes released details of the settlement, but Cynthia Rodriguez, 35, reportedly had requested equitable distribution of the couple's marital assets, as well as spousal support and child support, in her divorce petition back in July. She had also demanded life and health insurance, enough financial support to pay for their daughters' private schools, and sole ownership of the couple's Coral Gables, Florida waterfront home (valued at $12 million). Her intention was to continue the children's "high standard of living". Rodriguez, 33, then responded that he would only give her what they had decided on in their prenuptial agreement, according to the New York Daily News.

Cynthia Rodriguez cited her husband's alleged "long period of infidelity" when she filed her divorce papers. She also accused him of "emotionally abandoning" her, Natasha, and Ella. Rodriguez then reportedly demanded that the adulterous accusations be removed from all court records, while admitting that his marriage was "irretrievably broken".

Among the women rumored to be seeing Rodriguez was pop superstar Madonna, who is married to British film director Guy Ritchie. Us Weekly reported shortly before the divorce petition that the Yankee had been repeatedly visiting Madonna's New York apartment late at night, but the singer subsequently said that they were just good friends.

Alex Rodriguez, often known by the nickname A-Rod, began his Major League Baseball career with the Seattle Mariners in July 1994. Since then, he has been the American League MVP three times and a 12-time All-Star selection. He holds several MLB and AL Records in home runs.
