6 mo. ago our divorce was final. wife wanted car and i make payments on it, and she has to make a good faith atempt to get financed. also she was responsible for all of our marital debt. well when the car was picked up i removed my tags. well like i said 6 mos. have passed and no debt has been paid and the car is still in my name. I have made the car payment faithfully. Then came a shock i get served contempt papers because i took the plates off the car and would not renew the plates. She has not did one thing in the court order and is in contempt more than me. Do i have to give her my plates and renew them ?. In the divorce decree it only says she gets the car not drive it around in my name with my plates. Can i ask the courts to get the car back, sell it, pay off the finance co. and us just split our marital debt ?

I going through the same situation with my ex-wife. Since her credit was so bad, I had to get the car in my name. I awarded her the car in the divorce and be responsible for car note, insurance, taxes ext. She has not even paid the taxes on the car that was left off the loan by the salesman who unethically done this to lower the car note price. I too had to take the plates that was in my name off the SUV because she was being stop by the police for having improper plates that was not transfered to vehicle. I gotten legal advice saying if the car is in your name and in the divorce she is solely responsible for the finances of the car. If she fails to be responsible, then she should held in contempt and have to go back to court to explain why is not being responsible and assist to return the car back to me until she pays for taxes,plates, etc or just refinance the car in her name which I doubt she can and probably will be given by to finance company and move on. My advice for you to go to court to settle this. i would not bother to call her, just text her about this and save your texts without no profanity included, be business minded, not personal with your ex and she will get the message that she need to get this resolved.
