18 years ago I married a woman with 2 children from a previous marriage. The 2 girls were 3 and 11 months old. A few years after we were married I agreed to a vasectomy and loved and raised the girls as though they were mine.
After 13 years of marriage my wife cheated and we were divorced. My youngest step daughter was 14 years old at the time. After about a year and a half my then 17 year old stepdaughter moved to Florida and the youngest moved in with me as she wasn't getting along with her mother or biological father Now, 2+ years later she has graduated from high school and is getting ready for college. Or so I thought. I work at a University that offers education benefits (almost full tuition) to dependent children of employees. The policy reads children, step children, or children under legal guardianship. I was denied this benefit because according to the University my step daughter does not fit into any of those catagories. When does a step child stop being a step child. I think it's extremely unfair that my daughter of 17 years is not eligable for this benefit, but if I married a homeless women with 18 year old triplets tomorrow the University would gladly pay their tuition.
