I feel for you, since I am stuck wih permanent maintenace. I am in Illinois, Winnebago county. I was married for 23 years and 1 child. Paid my support and never missed a payment. Now out of child support, but still have alimony, and I lost a 23 year job 3 years ago. Now have a new one make 30k less then I did. I got remarried 3 years ago, and my new wife just went blind out of the blue in her left eye. The financial strain is getting to both of us. Now my x is has taken me back to court to get more money she she lost her job. We had a pre-trial and the judge didnt care of about my new wife blindness or the fact that I could loose my home. In the pre-trial. He said he makes X so he can pay it. What am I to do and where to turn. I called another lawyer and they said there is nothing I can do.... Help

I don't know what state you're in, but there is a national movement to end permanent alimony. Why should you, an adult, pay for another adult who simply chooses not to work because the law says they don't have to? 50 years ago when men made up the majority of the workforce, the laws may have been adequate. Today, where half of the workforce is women, there is no reason they cannot support themselves financially. Get involved in your state's alimony reform movement. If you move, it has to be to another country, and that also has many challenges.
Permanent Alimony to an able bodied educated adult who chooses not to work may be legal, but it's not right. You, I, and our country will finally speak up. Get Involved!
