Italy’s Soaring Divorce Rate

How to Get a Divorce

Since getting a divorce is easier in Romania, more and more foreign couples go there to get divorced.

The EU legislation which recognizes the divorce in other countries is the main factor that many couples take advantage of.

Recently there was a story of Italian couples who establish short-term residence in Romania only to get divorced since Italy's legal system doesn't allow quick divorce processes.

For couples without children in Romania, all a couple has to do is sign in front of a notary. They have 30 days to withdraw the divorce request and if the divorce is consensual, the notary will end the marriage.

Instead of going to court, the system now allows couples to get divorced in front of notaries. But even in court, the procedure takes only a few months.

According to the New York Times, law firms abroad have taken advantage of this and have started to offer such services to foreign nationals.

In countries like Italy, divorce is only possible after the three-year separation period. And if you add the legal process, divorce can take up to four years.

However if the split is not consensual, it can take up to ten years.

France, Britain and Spain are also known as divorce destinations but many people prefer Romania since it is cheaper and easier.

Divorzio Comodo, meaning "easy divorce", is one company that offers all-inclusive Romanian quickie divorces, including airfare, starting at about $5,000.
