In a recent statistics from the Greater Accra Head Office of Legal Aid Ghana, at least 40% of marriages registered annually in the region break up within 14 months.

An interesting yet startling news.

In a week, the number of females who apply for separation outweighs that of their male counterparts.

This was revealed by Mr. Ernest Mawuli Adzekey when he had an exclusive interview with the College Press newspaper.

He said that the number of divorce cases from January to September 2011 clearly shows that the number of cases is expected to outnumber that of previous years.

He also added that they had 125 marital cases in 2010 which they referred to their lawyers. Fortunately they were able to settle some of them amicably in their office.

Currently, more than 178 divorce cases are pending for final adjudication and hearing is yet to set on 146 cases.

Furthermore, Mr. Mawuli Adzekey divulged that regions such as Ashanti, Western and Brong Ahafo may follow the recent trend that is why it needs immediate response.

In his office, they provide two different forms of legal assistance which includes legal advice and representation. Legal advice is open to everyone while legal representation is only open to the poor in the society.

Another person who shared his thoughts on this alarming situation is Mr. Gideon Asante-Hemeng, a Marriage Counselor based in Accra.

According to his observation, the church and some religious leaders have failed to ensure that couples after marriage receive regular counsel.

Religious leaders only focus on courtship-counseling. Everything stops right after the couples have taken their marriage vows.

He believes that the churches and pastors are one of the reasons why there's an increase in divorce cases in the country since little is done right after the marriage.
