Police said a man suspected of killing his estranged wife in Phoenix in 2007 has been returned to Arizona. He fled to his home country of India after the incident.

The suspect, 36-year-old Avtar Singh Grewal, arrived in Phoenix on September 14. He is now in Maricopa County Jail on charges of first-degree murder and burglary.

Grewal pleaded not guilty at a court hearing, according to his attorney, Jeff Kirchler. He declined to comment further.

Since Grewal fled Phoenix after his wife's killing in March 2007, he has been behind bars in India. He had been fighting his extradition back to Arizona.

On March 30, 2007, police found the body of 30-year-old Navneet Kaur in her Ahwatukee home. Co-workers reported being worried about her because she was seeking a divorce from Grewal.

Police said Kaur had been strangled. Grewal admitted to killing her through a note.

According to Phoenix police Sgt Steve Martos, the crime was particularly heinous. Although it's been four and a half years, the police department is still excited to have him back. Mandeep Singh, Kaur's brother, released a statement saying the fight for Grewal's extradition has been long and painful.

He added his family is very certain that justice will be done and a strong message will be sent by punishing Grewal harshly.

According to Martos, Grewal and Kaur had been separated and Grewal was living in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Apparently Grewal wanted Kaur to move there with him but Kaur refused and instead asked him for a divorce.

The night of her killing, cops believe that Kaur picked up Grewal from the Phoenix airport.

Grewal was described as a controlling and jealous husband who would call Kaur at work up to 30 times a day.

Martos also said Grewal and Kaur were divorced when their parents arranged their marriage.
