July 26, 2011: Bill Approved Reforming Alimony System

In Massachusetts, a bill has been approved that will reform the state's alimony system.

The House of Representatives has unanimously approved the bill that will put an end to the so-called "lifetime alimony" payment ordered by some judges in divorce cases.

In addition the bill also sets limit on how much one spouse can be ordered to pay another.

For a 5-year marriage or less, the maximum alimony term would be half of the number of months of marriage, or 2 1/2 years.

The maximum alimony term for marriages over 15 years would be 80 percent of the months of marriage.

The supporters of the bill said Massachusetts' current alimony system is outdated and it creates unnecessary grudge and hesitation to settle the cases.

But the Senate still has to consider the measure.
