How Much Does a Divorce Cost?

Divorce Forum

A Satisfying Agreement

By April Lopez

For the past few years, some courts have earned a worldwide reputation for giving huge settlements to the wives of rich men involved in high profile divorce cases. And that's the British courts.

According to a senior judge, getting a divorce is easier in Britain than getting a driver's license.

Marriage breakdown is affecting everyone including the Royal Family and that's according to Sir Paul Coleridge, a Family Division judge.

Coleridge pointed out that people should re-educate themselves about the value of stable marriages.

Currently 3.8 million children are trapped in the family justice system and with no sign of that number going down.

High cost divorces are increasing and this has caused concern among the highest levels of Britain's legal system.

A judge sharply criticized some foreign nationals last year for using the British courts in settling their legal disputes although they have little connection to the country.

It was during the latest twist in the divorce battle between Russian tycoon Ilva Golubovich and his former wife Elena that Lord Justice Thorpe made his remarks.

The two have used several strategies including delaying tactics in London and Moscow with legal costs amounting to 2.25 million pounds during their dispute.

In the hopes of having a bigger settlement from her 24-year-old ex-husband, 26-year-old Mrs. Golubovich attempted to obtain a British divorce while Mr. Golubovich pursued a Russian decree nisi.

Three appeal judges strongly criticized the couple's use of the UK court although they accepted that his Russian divorce is well-grounded.

After an 18-month marriage, Elena was given 2.8 million pounds in a settlement in March. Ilva's lawyer remarked, Britain could be the divorce capital of the world.

London's reputation as the divorce capital of the world was even substantiated when a Nigerian woman last year was able to raise her settlement to 275,000 pounds, 10 times her original settlement, after she brought her case to the Supreme court.
