"Can I object to the amount of fees charged by my lawyer?"

You have every right to object to the fees charged by your attorney if you feel that they are unreasonable. During your initial consultation, you should decide if the attorney's hourly rate is within your budget. It is important to understand the attorney's and the staff's rates. Once you have decided that the firm is right for your needs, you should take the time to review and understand every word in the employment contract. Always remember the attorney you hire works for you.

You should always receive monthly statements showing the work done on your case by every employee of the firm. Should you find that a fee has been charged that you did not expect or were not made aware of in writing, you should immediately discuss it with your attorney or your attorney's billing department. Do not put this discussion off.

If you feel that you have not received a legitimate resolution to your complaint, contact your local bar association. A member will likely ask that you send them a letter describing your complaint, and they should review it and contact you shortly thereafter. In counties which have a "fee-dispute committee", you should be directed to their attention, and they will assist you in challenging the fees charged if your complaint appears reasonable.
