Control your own divorce by using mediation Mediation is one of the best ways to resolve conflict – especially divorce. For more than a decade, Creative Outcomes has helped both individuals and organizations work through interpersonal and workplace disputes. The opportunity to speak freely and be heard "Mediation provides a safe environment where people can say what they want the other side to hear," says Creative Outcomes founder Sarah Gayer, a veteran mediator. "I interview each party separately as well, because when they're together, they may not speak as freely. I build trust and my clients know that I'm not judging them." She also puts great importance in maintaining a transparent process. "When I send an e-mail to one spouse, I also ensure that the other party receives a copy," Sarah says. "All communication is shared between the parties involved. I make sure everybody is heard, balancing out the power between the parties." Sarah often works alone but occasionally calls upon associates to collaborate with her.
A highly seasoned mediator who trains other mediators What sets Sarah's practice apart is the way she allows her clients to direct the process and empowers them to make decisions. "I like to think of myself as the conductor, as in an orchestra," explains Sarah. "When I meet with clients together, we walk through the process to ensure that they are comfortable with it, and then they're completely in charge of the outcomes." Sarah is a member of the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals, the Ontario Association of Family Mediators and the ADR Institute of Ontario. Sarah, who has been a mediator since the 1980s, also trains others. Her training aims to build skills through her high-impact workshops. Subjects include Anger Management, Dealing with Difficult People, and Building Self Esteem and Assertiveness Skills. Create your own divorce agreement with your spouse Sarah's goal is for both parties to walk away knowing they've been heard and understood. "I would rather have clients coordinate an agreement they can live with," she says, "than have a judge decide when, how, and how much. The outcome may not be exactly what they wanted when they first walked into my office, but they know they created it themselves. "I like seeing people succeed, and I do what I can to ensure I provide a safe environment for them to do so. I take great pride in what I do and go above and beyond to help."
