Strong, fit, and progressive: the law firm of Gruber, Colabella, Liuzza, Kutyla & Williams has the qualities you need to bring your case to a smooth and successful conclusion.

Gruberpicweb.jpg (9482 bytes)Law is one of the most time-honored professions. But if you're going through a separation or divorce, you can't count on tradition alone to see you through: you need a firm that stays abreast of the many complex legal and emotional issues that surround the divorce process. This is where the attorneys at the New Jersey law firm of Gruber, Colabella, Liuzza, Kutyla & Williams can help. "We can guide you through the maze of modern problems associated with divorce," says Mark Gruber, JD, LLM, and founder of the firm. "We are a 'nouveau' law firm: we are not old fashioned or 'old school.' We're young, and we operate in a 21st-century manner. We speak your language and understand your needs."

Gruber, who founded the firm in 1978 as a sole practitioner, says that family law "chose him," rather than vice versa. "When we opened, the fellow who came in to install the phones had a custody case. I did well with it, and the next thing I knew, other attorneys were referring cases to me. It just took off from there." Today, with two offices (in Newton and Hopatcong) and a total of ten attorneys, Gruber, Colabella, Liuzza, Kutyla & Williams has grown into one of Northern New Jersey's most influential law firms. Despite their size, Gruber says that there is a "spirit of closeness" within the firm. "We're tight," he explains. "We're like a family. We spend a lot of time together developing the practice and improving our skills and knowledge of the law through in-house seminars. We all work in a high-stress, high-demand, and hectic profession: we need to keep ourselves strong, healthy, and fit. Our diet and exercise are our continuing legal education and our inward awareness that we're a firm."

Modern modes of communication are also very important to the firm. "Each of us has internet access, car phones, faxes, and we have our own internal internet/e-mail system, so if a client calls and if I'm not around, they can leave a detailed voice mail, which I can pick up in the hallway of the courtroom from my cell phone while I'm waiting for my next case, or I'll call them back from my car on my way back to my office," says Gruber. "Each of us also explains how to communicate so we have very little phone tag."

When a new client walks through the door for an initial free consultation, the attorneys review the issues and let them know how the law applies to their factual situation. "Then we give them an idea of where the case should go -- the strategy -- how we would approach the resolution of their problem," says Gruber. "After they retain us, we continue to gather information, then we follow it up by actually preparing a road map towards the resolution of the case." The firm's attorneys encourage those just beginning to consider divorce to attempt reconciliation or marriage counseling, he adds. "Many times, I also recommend that clients speak to a confidante, their clergy person, or a relative. I want them to be very sure they're making the right decision. Once they're sure, it's full steam ahead."

An accomplished author, television host and panelist, and divorce arbitrator and mediator; Gruber has been a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers since 1988. But it's the seminars that he presents to young lawyers that allow him to best express how he feels about his profession. "It is just so rewarding when one of those lawyers comes up to me afterwards and says, 'I never thought family law could be as you describe it,'" he explains. "I always tell them, 'People think about divorce for six weeks, six months, maybe even six years, before they come to see a family-law attorney. It's a big step. They're looking for guidance, and they ask you very, very important life questions. It's a big responsibility because you are affecting people's lives.' A good divorce lawyer blends law, psychology, and philosophy," he concludes. "Divorce involves all aspects of life and law, and it's very rewarding and fulfilling. You help someone through a very trying time in his or her life, and at the end of the case, you get a handshake or a hug. That's what it's all about."
