"I have a very strong presence in the courtroom," Chawla says. "I am always in control of our position and anticipate both the offense and defense. I have a good handle on what to expect from judges and know how the courts operate." A significant part of his success in litigation comes from his penchant for courtroom strategy. Yet he never forgets his purpose of helping his clients through the process. "My goal is to effectively and efficiently provide representation that achieves clients' objectives." His dedicated advocacy for his clients is a product of his enormous sympathy for the emotional turmoil they're experiencing. "I understand what people are going through in the dissolution of their families and post dissolution," Chawla says. With warmth and sincerity, he comforts people and helps them through the divorce process by giving them honest, direct guidance. "Treat custody issues and finances separately," he advises. "Negotiate the asset allocation as a business transaction." He's also cognizant that divorce can become very expensive, so he looks for ways to save the client money.
Chawla has frequently been appointed on committees to represent children, and he has witnessed first-hand the damage that divorcing couples' actions can do to their kids. "It is difficult to deal with parents who fail to recognize their priorities. They often find themselves on their own missions of vindictiveness, to the detriment of the kids. People do so many things out of spite, not realizing the effect on their children." So he always makes sure that the best interests of his clients' children are the first priority and never neglected. Chawla also has a lot of experience in estate planning, which comes in very handy in divorce work. "It helps me to protect estates from attacks of the ex-spouse," he explains. The fact that he does not have to turn to outside expertise for divorces with complex estates can save his clients both time and money. His firm has several other attorneys who also handle family law, and his staff come from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Chawla himself is of East Indian. “It is important to me that all ethnic communities are represented,” he says. “I have an international firm with a broad spectrum of attorneys. We have lawyers and paralegals who are fluent in Punjabi, Hindi, French, and Gujarati. Family law comes naturally to Chawla, whether he is litigating or negotiating, because of his compassion and eagerness to help others. "I am doing something that will hopefully produce a positive effect on a family's future. My objective is to make the process as non-invasive and innocuous as possible," he says. Rely on Paul Chawla to give you first-class representation.
