NAVIGATING unfamiliar ground is always unsettling. But when you're going through divorce, lack of knowledge about the process can be frightening, says Lori Barkus, Esq., a South Florida family-law attorney, mediator, and collaborative lawyer. "Many people are unfamiliar with the divorce process and the options available," she explains. "They're concerned not only about the emotional impact of divorce upon themselves and their children but also about their financial resources. "Take the time to find out not only about an attorney's qualifications, but also whether you can relate to him or her," she advises. "Not only should you trust the person you hire, you should also trust their advice and know that it's in your best interest." Effective communication skills are also an important factor when selecting an attorney, she adds: "We return calls and respond to inquiries on a same-day basis."

Barkus has practiced law since 1998. A cum laude graduate of the University of Miami School of Law, she is admitted to practice in Florida, Georgia, and the District of Columbia, in addition to the Southern and Middle Districts of Florida and the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court of Appeals. "When a client tells me that they feel they can go on with their lives and move forward, when their children are doing well, I know we've taken care of them."
