"My case is somewhat complicated. Do I need to hire a lawyer who specializes in divorce law? Will a specialist be more expensive than a 'regular' lawyer?"

One concept that needs to be understood is the difference between a "Certified Family Law Specialist" and a lawyer who specializes in family law. A Certified Family Law Specialist has passed an exam and met other requirements, such as having handled a certain number of family law trials and Order to Show Cause hearings, etc. A attorney who specializes in family law typically does only family-law matters and is familiar with the law, the judges, and the other lawyers.

A Certified Family Law Specialist usually is more expensive than an attorney who has not passed the exam and met the other requirements.

A complicated case may be handled quite competently by an attorney who limits his/her practice to family law. Your attorney must get a tax advisor involved, to determine the tax ramifications of the divorce. An appraiser is usually appointed by the court to value a community property business or residence, so that your attorney will have help in these important issues.

If your case involves really difficult issues of property division, taxation, etc., you should interview both kinds of family law attorneys. It is always a good idea to have an office conference with at least two different divorce lawyers (three would be better) so that you can determine which one is best for you; which one is a good fit for you, and which one you can afford.
